Is Aqueduct closing for good? ›

In December 2022 the NYRA formally announced its intention to upgrade the facilities at nearby Belmont Park to make it suitable to host year-round thoroughbred racing and training, which would ultimately lead to the closure of Aqueduct Racetrack, sometime in late 2026.

With Empire City and Jamaica both closed in the late 1950s, the New York City area had just Aqueduct and Belmont Park, so shutting the latter permanently would hurt racing in the area. Instead, NYRA opted to raze and then rebuild Belmont Park and temporarily moved the track's races, including its stakes, to Aqueduct.

In 1975, it opened its winterized, one-mile inner dirt track on the former site of the inner turf course; and on October 11, 1981, it unveiled one of the largest restaurants in New York City, the multi-tiered Equestris.

Aqueduct Racetrack, also known as The Big A, is the only racetrack in New York City, occupying 210 acres in South Ozone Park in the borough of Queens.

The 2024 Belmont Stakes were moved to Saratoga Race Course, due to the renovations, and the 2025 Belmont Stakes are planned for Saratoga as well. As of July 2024, the second Belmont Park is completely demolished with reconstruction planned until September 2026.
