FOUR FLAVORS OF GOLF-BALL-TAKE-HOME DESSERT FOR BUSINESS GATHERINGS.This week we hosted a capacity crowd in my chicken coop office, a fundraiser for Gold Star daughter and State Representative Dr. Lori Goss-Reaves. Our house and the coop are at the end of our driving range, and next to the Indiana Wesleyan University practice facilities. As the guests arrived, the first thing they saw were four flavors of take-home dessert: Pro V1, Srixon, TaylorMade, and Bridgestone! By evening’s end, all but two of the bags in the stack were filled.Fun, memorable idea. Even non-golfers took some for golfing friends. Also, we allowed each guest to choose from the stacks of books Lori and I had written through the years. It made me wonder if we all have such items around our houses that guests at business events would enjoy. The State Representative’s office informed the guests via invitations that the books were part of the evening, & the exact time when they’d be offered. However, not the Take-Home Desserts. BTW, they were like-new balls I found on the course (Arbor Trace) during my morning walks. One morning the reclaimed gems numbered 143. This morning, only 5. I give them all away, usually to families or beginning golfers. Once I gave ten to a 20-sometihng on our par 5 (hole 15 in a woods). Why? Because after dribbling his drive he hit five straight second shots into the woods. After giving him the balls, I left & I could hear a few more balls bounce off trees. I likely found all ten within the next few days. I’ve found balls with many of my friends’ names. Bible verses – which looked like they’d never been hit, and placed there to witness to their discoverer. Many with swear words. Some with names and “return to.” A few with a current politician’s face and the words “I’m lost!” Unfortunately, some with semi-pornographic sketches. The most puzzling perhaps was one of our course's new practice balls. A particular one –clearly marked as the golf course’s and for the range – had in big letters the person’s initials and markings (3 dots and a sign). If a ball thief is gonna hack it into the woods, he or she certainly shouldn't sign it! One fun aside – Lori Reaves’ husband is the talented illustrator, Eric Reaves. He draws the syndicated cartoon, Hi & Lois, and for the previous 17 years drew the Garfield cartoon strip. He’s in the picture on the left in red, taking a picture of Lori. Observing his commitment and support to her and this venture was itself worth the event. Two of his paintings hang in my office/coop.Our course is on The Garfield Trail, and has a large wooden statue of Garfield--the only of its type on the county tour (Garfield originated with Jim Davis in nearby Fairmount, IN). Golf is a game changer for building business relationships.I learned how to golf at age 10- I acknowledge that I had the privilege and opportunity to do so and as a business owner I have seen how learning to golf can be a game-changer—not just for your swing, but for your business career as well. Here are some of the benefits Networking OpportunitiesGolf is renowned for its ability to facilitate connections. Business deals and partnerships often blossom on the course. Golf outings provide a relaxed environment where you can engage with colleagues, clients, and potential partners in a less formal setting. Our bodies vibrate at a different frequency when our feet are on grass;it's part of the magic!Building Trust and RelationshipsSpending four hours on a golf course allows for meaningful conversations that can strengthen relationships. The camaraderie developed during a round of golf fosters trust, which is essential for successful business interactions. While golfing you can also learn pretty quickly whether your playing partner is a cheater, a grump, honest or fun!Enhancing Communication SkillsAs a child I played with adults a lot..in fact I played many a club event while paired with my high school principal! Golf encourages communication, whether it's providing encouragement, or sharing vulnerabilities. It enhances your interpersonal skills, making you a more effective communicator in business settings. Demonstrating ProfessionalismBeing able to play golf and understand the etiquette shows that you are well-rounded and understand the nuances of business etiquette, which impresses clients and colleagues.Developing Strategic ThinkingGolf is a game of strategy that requires foresight. Moreover, when you are a beginner playing with more advanced players, a strategic understanding of how to carry yourself goes a long way.Stress Relief and Mental ClarityThe peaceful environment of a golf course provides a great escape from the fast-paced world we live in. Golf can help reduce stress, leading to clearer thinking and improved decision-making. Please try and leave your phone interactions to a minimum on the course:it's worth it! Fostering Team BuildingOrganizing golf outings for your team is a fun way to build teamwork and camaraderie, which can lead to greater productivity in the office.Improving Focus and PatienceMany will say that golf is more a mental game. Success in golf requires concentration, a positive mindset and the ability to remain calm under pressure. These skills are invaluable in business, where staying focused on your goals and maintaining composure during challenges is crucial.Creating Lasting ImpressionsA round of golf can leave a lasting impression on clients and peers. It provides a unique opportunity to showcase your character and professionalism in a relaxed setting, reinforcing your relationships and business reputation.#golfPamela Green Emma Fitzpatrick Michelle Choi Faizal Javer

Is there any such thing as a week off as a business owner?Yesterday I was on site assisting with pack down of one of the multiple outdoor events we have running at the moment. Our team have been working relentlessly to keep them operating smoothly and many of the crew haven’t been home for weeks as they hop from county to county keeping the dream alive!Having not seen some of the crew since Glastonbury, one of the team made a quip in jest, “have you enjoyed your week off?”I was immediately defensive, obviously not having to answer to anyone as the owner, but carefully responding being empathetic towards the fact he’d been slogging it out at multiple events over three weeks, not wanting to seem boastful that I’d been home and enjoyed some of the comforts that are sorely missed while on the road. I hastily replied, I’ve been busy!! Which I had, as a father and a businessman there’s always something to do!It got me thinking about what my role really is as a director and owner of a QSR brand and outdoor event operator. Should I have even been on site?Do I have to answer to anyone? What had I been doing all week? Now, I started this company myself ten years ago, on the road, with my sleeves rolled up and feet on the ground. I was not a businessman, or even a chef. Through hard-work and determination, it grew into a very busy business and things are different now. As much as I love being on site and am always happy to muck in, sometimes it’s detrimental to the growth and development of our company and could give the wrong impression to the people who work to make it work. And then I thought about what I had been doing the past week, when I’m not necessarily visible. I had been running the business, dealing with a multitude of tasks such as the dreaded VAT return and accountancy meetings, a ew site visit looking at a retail opportunity, marketing and PR projects, event planning and logistics. So, to conclude with my final thoughts; it’s good to be seen but it’s also important to not be seen. There’s always something to do as a business owner but it’s important to empathise with your team and hold in mind what THEY have been doing and to understand why they may be asking a question and what they really mean. He just wanted to go home, have a bath and sleep in his own bed. And I wanted that for him, which is why I was there at all. Sometimes you just got to roll your sleeves up. Now, I’m off to play golf! ;)

THE MAKING OF ME : THANK YOU HAWTHORN FOOTBALL CLUB ❤️❤️🩷1987, aged 25, I was thrust into hosting major events as a part time job as a corporate hostess outside teaching at a public secondary school full-time. This photo was taken Grand Final Day at the MCG. Nervous yet excited I was rubbing shoulders with past players, comedians and the corporate elite of Melbourne I was responsible for hosting and running the marquee ensuring our corporate guests received the highest standard of service and a pre-game experience which was part and parcel of the winning streak of Hawthorn Football Club The interpersonal skills I developed from handling complaints, drunks, small talk, lost tickets in real time without any form of app, internet, google maps, QR codes or phones of any description has provided me with the capacity to communicate with anyone on any level, think quick on my feet and a self confidence that was lacking before I started working at the clubMany of you looking at this picture would consider me lucky but some of the events were stressful. You don't get second chances in real time whilst trying to create a lasting impression. How to handle situations that came out of left field is one of the reasons I'm a quick problem solver and good with people. From the catering staff running out of beer to guests turning up and then realising who ever put the floor plan together made a mistake and no table was available had me workshopping solutions on the run! 🏃♀️As I reflect on the impact this has had on my life, I'm so grateful that I was part of the early days when the club was a pioneering and carving itself as a leader in corporate hospitality. It led me to run a successful multi million dollar corporate event management business which further honed my skills in sales, event management, negotiation and working DIRECTLY with the Marriner Theatres and Concert promoters such as Paul Dainty. Today I am a believer anything is possible. Which is why I'm not afraid to think BIG with a focus on PROSPERITY. Devising business development strategies for projects that always feature events as that is my 🙂 place bringing people together. I no longer feel I have to prove anything having run 3 businesses, worked in Real Estate and changed the lives of my clients through my contract work. As I look at a return to teaching in 2024 combining it with a project I'm working on in tourism it feels like I've come full circle. As a connector coach I will be ensuring that my students know the value of a network and to value human connection. I cannot leave what lights me up however which is creating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Business Development strategies that deliver BIG impact and building my keynote speakingTo that end watch this space! 😀#2024opportunities #ilovewhatido #feelingblessed

I picked up my first set of golf clubs back in university, inspired by my dad, a passionate golfer who believed that networking in real estate often happens on the fairway. Fast forward over 20 years in my career, and despite having toured a number of golf courses and sold golf club hotels during my time as a hotel broker, I’ve yet to receive a single invite to a mixed group corporate golf day. Can you believe it? Statistics from the UK Golf Federation reveal that men hold a staggering 85% of golf club memberships in the UK. Enter Skratch Events who are on a mission to change this! 🌟 They specialise in creating welcoming corporate golf events that foster friendly environments for women—where fun, learning, and networking thrive, free from any mansplaining. Recently, a few of us from the CBRE UK OPRE team had the privilege of attending their second Women in Business Golf Day. This inclusive event, designed for all skill levels, featured a personal development workshop by Collaboration Equation followed by expert lessons from the coaches Moor Park. It was inspiring to connect with amazing women from fields like law, private equity, finance, and aerospace, all sharing stories of past exclusion from traditional golf events. We are in the midst of a corporate shift towards greater inclusivity, and it’s crucial for decision-makers, sponsors, and event managers to step up. Here are my suggestions for fostering a more inclusive golfing culture:🏌️♀️Extend Genuine Invitations:It may sound simple, but it’s so important! Invite women—and in meaningful numbers. Being the minority can be intimidating, so let’s ensure everyone feels welcome.🏌️♀️ Offer Diverse Classes:Everyone has to start somewhere! Pairing beginners with experts can be daunting. Let’s create sessions tailored to all skill levels, allowing everyone to enjoy the post-golf networking without the pressure.🏌️♀️Make it Accessible:Not everyone can invest in pricey golf gear. Let’s get creative—organise casual events without strict dress codes to ensure everyone has a seat at the table (or the tee box)! Offer your equipment, share your attire - be that friend. We all know the power of networking and client relationship development for business, one of the reason why golf days are so popular in our industry, but golf is just one example of the bigger issue - the unconscious bias of exclusion of women from networking events limit the ability for women to grow their network and profile. Let’s work together to transform the corporate and golf landscape into an inclusive space where everyone can belong and thrive! Thank you to everyone who were involved:CBRE UK Intermediate Capital Group (ICG) Skratch Women Collaboration Equation #golfdays #golf #inclusion #womeninbusiness #CBREWomen
